Edward Sutherland, MD, MPH, DrPH

Dr. Edward Kofi Sutherland is a medical doctor, public health scholar, and implementation scientist, currently serving as a full-time lecturer and Medical Director at Ensign Global University. A mission-driven leader in implementation science and digital health innovation, he focuses on bridging gaps in service delivery and access across low and middle-income countries.

Dr. Sutherland is an alumnus of the inaugural graduating class of Ensign College of Public Health (now Ensign Global University) and a distinguished graduate of the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program in Implementation Science at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (USA). He earned his medical degree on a full scholarship from I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University—Russia’s oldest and most prestigious medical school—ranked among the top institutions in Eastern Europe for clinical training and biomedical research.

Dr. Sutherland’s primary focus is on studying the epidemiological transition from acute infectious diseases to chronic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancers, and HIV/AIDS, particularly within developing countries. He complements this work with strong community engagement, promoting both individual and community-centered health literacy and communication.

His academic interests also include critically examining global and local health systems, analyzing trends that shape community well-being, and engineering sustainable partnerships between governments, academic institutions, and non-governmental organizations to advance health equity. He is particularly passionate about evolving diagnostic and curative health technologies, and is committed to bridging the gap in scientific innovation between privileged and underserved populations.

He is the visionary founder and principal investigator of the Real-Time Interface for Healthcare (RTIF), a pioneering digital platform developed under his leadership at Ensign Global University, strategically positioned to support national efforts toward real-time health system visibility and equitable service access—offering a scalable model for digital health innovation in low and middle-income countries.

Dr. Sutherland also serves as the West Africa Site Director for the University of Utah’s Center for Global Surgery, where he oversees collaborative research, surgical training, and capacity-building efforts across Ghana and the broader region. Additionally, he serves as Clinical Advisor for the “Health 2 Go” project, supporting decentralized primary healthcare delivery in Ghana’s Eastern Region.

His work has been featured at international conferences including the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC) and the American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting, and he continues to mentor emerging public health professionals, contribute to peer-reviewed publications, and influence policy through research that is both contextually grounded and globally relevant.
