Ensign Global College’s Impactful Community Engagement Activities

Ensign Global College stands firm in its commitment to community engagement. The institution, driven by a shared passion for prosperity and positive change, has spearheaded several impactful initiatives throughout the semester. Below are highlights of some noteworthy community engagement activities that reflect Ensign’s dedication to making a difference:

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
During this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month Campaign, “Keep Her in the Picture,” Ensign Global College students collaborated with the Centre for Global Surgery of the University of Utah and the Health Promotion Unit at the Lower Manya Krobo Health Directorate. The students took a proactive approach by organizing events, including breast cancer screenings, vital checks, health education, and counseling. Their efforts aimed to enhance community health and well-being. Dr. Edward Sutherland emphasized, “I believe that by shining a spotlight on breast cancer, we contribute to a collective effort that can save lives and promote a healthier, informed community.”

Mental Health Day at the Krobo Presbyterian Girls School
On October 10, 2023, faculty members Dr. Kushitor and Dr. Ofori Boateng, along with Ensign MPH students, dedicated Mental Health Day to educate the student body at Krobo Girls Presbyterian Senior High School. Interactive sessions emphasized the importance of embracing one’s uniqueness and understanding self-worth. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about mental health topics and promote a supportive environment within the school community. Dr. Kushito affirmed,  “Openly addressing mental health contributes to cultivating a campus environment that prioritizes well-being, diminishes stigma, and fosters a culture of understanding and compassion.”

ANEG Collaboration
Ensign Global College partnered with the ANEG Foundation to host the 4th Annual Girls Summit on October 28, 2023. Over 500 girls from selected schools gathered at the Ensign Global College Campus for an empowering event.

Dr. Gideon Prempeh Owusu,  MPH Candidate, said,  “We served as mentors, engaging these young minds as resource persons, emphasizing the importance of sharing our experiences to inspire and empower them to achieve their goals. What struck me was their receptiveness and eagerness to learn. They asked important questions and openly shared their challenges. It was a powerful reminder of the potential within these girls and the impact mentorship can have on shaping their future.”

World Aids Day
This year’s World AIDS Day, December 1, 2023, coincided with Ghana’s Farmers Day Celebration. Ensign Global College students teamed up with the Yilo Krobo Municipal Health Directorate, to contribute to this year’s Farmers Day event at the DVLA premises in Somanya. While farmers were celebrated for their agricultural contributions, Ensign Global College students and the health directorate conducted general health screenings and HIV testing. This dual initiative aimed to raise awareness about HIV prevention and promote overall well-being within the community. Rosemary Lartey-Nyaunu affirmed,  “I firmly believe that through sustained awareness, understanding, and support, we can actively contribute to building a world free from the challenges posed by HIV/AIDS.”

Community Assistance for Akosombo Dam Spillage
In collaboration with Engage Now Africa, Ensign Global College faculty, staff, and students provided crucial support to communities affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage. Essential supplies, including food items and toiletries, were delivered to Bakpa Zorotodzi, Bakpa Awaduwekorme, and Pediatorkope communities. Dr. Stephen Manortey, Head of the Master of Public Health Program at Ensign Global College, highlighted the college’s commitment to understanding the public health implications of the challenges faced by the affected communities. Dr. Manortey also expressed Ensign’s dedication to conducting in-depth research to assess the health impact of the broken water systems in these areas. He emphasized the institution’s role in preventing future occurrences and pledged to share the research findings with the public to promote awareness and learning. Ensign Global College’s dedication to community engagement goes beyond education, creating a positive impact on the lives of many in Ghana. These initiatives reflect the institution’s belief in the transformative power of education and collective action for a healthier and more prosperous society.
